About

International touring company and pioneers of signdance theatre, Signdance Collective are pleased to announce their brand new project: ’The Turtle Trials’.

Initially inspired by Dr Suess’ poem ‘Yertle The Turtle’, the project offers a unique opportunity for young people to learn about turtles through sign language, dance, music, scent and storytelling. ‘The Turtle Trials’ is a fully inclusive, interactive and immersive project, designed to help young people learn more about the environment and how we can all engage more positively with it.

The project will break down barriers that constrain participation and provide an important access point for all young people (including BME, deaf and disabled people) to enjoy a fun, powerful, exciting and educational experience.

The audience will learn about various concepts through a unique fusion of signdance theatre and several languages (Welsh, Spanish, English and International Sign), helping to breaking down communication barriers and open up discussions about where we live and our sense of belonging in a highly visual and inclusive manner.  “We are looking forward to welcoming children and their families across North Wales to the Turtle Trials...the workshops are guaranteed to be fun and a chance to explore the stories of turtles and conservation.” - David Bower

Background & Tour:

The initial research & development for ‘The Turtle Trials’ was supported by Arts Council of Wales in 2017. Working in Bangor, Bethesda, Brynsiencyn, Holyhead and Wrexham, SDC explored the life of turtles and tortoises with a variety of young people, aiming to ultimately engage them in a new signdance theatre project.

Now that the R&D stage is complete, SDC will be revisiting some of the places that helped them gain invaluable insight as well as expand to new venues and form new community bonds. The tour will see performances and workshops take place at Ucheldre Centre, Anglesey Sea Zoo, Neuadd Ogwen, BAWSO, Dynamic, Undegun and Wrexfest throughout May, June and July 2018.

Digital Platform & Interaction:

‘The Turtle Trials’ will offer young people a truly innovative way to experience, consider and discuss current environmental issues. This will also be the case online, where the discussion and collective sharing of ideas will continue on the project’s digital platform: theturtletrials.com Here young people will be able to access videos, artwork, stories, articles and more.

They will also have the opportunity to submit their own work and have it showcased to others. This space will provide access to millions more people, so that they are able to join in with ‘The Turtle Trials’ no matter where they are.
